An interesting way to attract attention in a home is to create an exposed wall with an antique flavor, which recalls the mind in past times, when the houses were made entirely of stone or wood. However, unless you want to stumble in the obvious fake, these works make it better inside homes that already have some historical relevance , such as old farmhouses or old mountain houses. Making an exposed wall in a house that is evident not to be more than thirty years old means to be aware that anyone who sees it realizes that it "jars" with the environment and that it is obviously a fake.
Instead, when you are in front of a house with a historical value of the type highlighted a few lines above, then you can think of creating an exposed wall, always taking into account the history of the house, the time it has lived, the place in where it is located. Before proceeding with an intervention, therefore, even in this case it is advisable to seek advice from restoration experts or interior designers , who can well direct you to the type of exposed wall to be made and on which point to choose.
Once all this has been defined beforehand, it is possible to begin the actual processing. It is not necessary to have specialized personnel, although obviously some experience in the sector helps. An ideal team is made up of at least three people , but even with two you can get the result. If the structure is not subject to particular constraints, then you can do a real project or a DIA (notification of the start of activity) to the City.
If it is necessary to remove the plaster from the wall to be treated it is necessary to use a mechanical breaker , especially if cement and mortar are to be removed. There are various types, with a preponderance of those with electric operation. By removing the plaster, try not to chip the underlying stones, since they must remain visible. After this preliminary operation, a pneumatic chisel is used to clean the cracks between the stones, where the mortar will then be inserted, without using water again. The steel brush is then passedfor the cleaning of the stones (only to eliminate residual dirt and NOT to try to revive the colors). Scratching stones with a brush or a sandblasting machine is a mistake, made by many in the past, because the stone is damaged.
To prepare the mortar necessary to close the joints, a cement mixer is used . The mortar should be composed with three parts of thin sand and one of cement of a single type, then "spread" on the cracks between the stones, without covering the latter. After about a couple of hours, pick up the steel brush and clean the tiles, leaving the spaces as far as you want. With the same brush, press the mortar to make it take root better. The advice is to leave the mortar two cm from the outer edge of the stones to highlight them and create play of light and shadows when illuminated. Also use anti-humid if you are in a place where the rain is quite frequent.
The entire work must be done very carefully to avoid breaking the stones or leaving spaces subject to infiltration.
